Gone with the Wind
De (autor): Margaret Mitchell
The pampered daughter of a wealthy Georgian plantation owner of Irish descent, sixteen-year-old Scarlett O'Hara soon realizes that young men can't resist her charms, despite her forthright manners and her refusal to embrace her mother's ladylike ways. Her romantic intrigues lead her to an early marriage, but when the war between the Union and the Southern States breaks out and she is left a young widow, Scarlett's life is turned upside down, and she finds herself embroiled, together with the world surrounding her, in a long struggle for survival. Both a coming-of-age tale and a historical epic, Gone with the Wind is regarded as one of the great American novels, and is perhaps one of the most popular stories in the Western canon. Famously inspiring the iconic 1939 Oscar-winning film starring Vivien Leigh as Scarlett and Clark Gable as the rakish but cynical Rhett Butler, it is Margaret Mitchell's only published novel, and a living testament to the irrepressible resilience of the American spirit.

Margaret Mitchell's epic novel "Gone with the Wind" brings readers to the turbulent environment of the American South during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. Scarlett O'Hara, a feisty and fiercely independent young woman, is at the core of the narrative, tracing her path from pampered Southern beauty to stubborn survivor.
One of the novel's most enduring characteristics is its diverse and nuanced characters. Scarlett, in particular, is an intriguing and paradoxical personality, both vicious and tender, greedy yet self-sacrificing. As she navigates the difficulties of war and its aftermath, she emerges as a figure of perseverance and tenacity in the face of adversity.
Despite its length, "Gone with the Wind" is a page-turner, bringing readers into its vividly realised universe and keeping them there until the very end. While the novel has been criticised for its romanticised image of slavery and handling of race, it is nonetheless regarded as a seminal work of American literature, capturing the spirit of a bygone period with both nostalgia and brutal honesty.

I saw the film as a child and always wanted to read the book. Unfortunately i couldn't find it in English anywhere in my city, so I ordered from Libris. The delivery was fairly quick (around 10 days, considering it came from the UK) and the actual story very interesting. I'm glad to see the progress mankind has made on how we treat each other. A hurtful thing to read these stereotypes and caricatures of Black folks, but historically insightful.
