John "JT" Williams, a young black man growing up on the seamy side of Chicagoland, stood at a crossroads. He figured he had two choices: He could run the streets with others his age and probably wind up behind bars like a caged animal, or he could get an education that led him on a path toward a better life than that endured by his mother and her forebears, the direct descendants of slaves.

He chose the latter. But being a black man living in a predominately white world still presented many challenges and obstacles to overcome.
