Sacred Editors: How Preservation, Transmission, and Insight Shaped the Buddhist Canon

Buddhist teachings didn't survive as unchanged oral tradition-they were preserved through countless human decisions across twenty-five centuries.

From the Buddha's death to today's digital archives, Buddhists have treasured the Dharma as timeless wisdom. But behind every sutra lies a hidden history of choices: which teachings to include in early councils, how to translate concepts across vastly different cultures, whose interpretations would become canonical-and which alternative traditions would be lost forever.

Sacred Editors reveals the remarkable human story behind Buddhism's diverse scriptural traditions. From legendary councils attempting to preserve the Buddha's exact words to Silk Road translators adapting Indian concepts for Chinese audiences, from Tibetan scholars creating vast commentary traditions to modern publishers standardizing texts across global communities.

Drawing on the work of leading Buddhist scholars, historians, and manuscript specialists, Kevin Meyer weaves together insights that illuminate how human devotion preserved and transformed the Buddha's teachings across continents, languages, and cultures. This isn't a book that challenges Buddhism's wisdom-it celebrates the extraordinary human dedication that kept the Dharma alive through empires, persecutions, and technological revolutions.

Thoughtfully synthesized and accessibly written, Sacred Editors offers both practitioners and curious readers fresh insights into how twenty-five centuries of human stewardship have shaped the world's most geographically diverse religious tradition.
