Sheila Wheeler has pioneered the field of telephone triage since 1985. Ms. Wheeler authored the first training manual - Telephone Triage: Theory, Practice and Protocol Development - a best-selling classic in the field.
In 1995, with a Task Force of 25+ expert nurses and physicians, Ms. Wheeler served as Editor-in-Chief to develop Adult and Pediatric Telephone Triage Guidelines (1995 -2017) -- the first and only three-volume, age-based guidelines to utilize a 5-Tier Triage approach to Telephone Triage. Ms Wheeler's research on decision maker safety in telephone triage was published in 2015 in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare. She has lectured internationally. From 1994-2003 she served as founder and chairperson of "Telephone Triage: Essentials for Expert Practice", the first national telephone triage conference. She has served as a nurse legal consultant in the area of telephone triage since 1995. Ms. Wheeler has contributed to the development of the field as an accomplished speaker, trainer, writer, educator, researcher, telephone triage nurse and consultant.
