Once he sets his feet on the shores of America, he sets out to find physical work where he can use the strength of his hands to undo his shame. After a chance encounter on the streets of New York City, he accepts an employment offer in Saratoga Springs. When an unexpected betrayal drives him away from the work he loves, he wanders through the south, searching for a place to call home. In a small town in South Carolina, he befriends a young woman who embodies the open heart he desires. Will the cruel deception she endures enable George to discover what he has sought all along?
