Un estudiante llega a una universidad de Colorado, en los Estados Unidos, en busca del sueño americano en su versión académica. Animales luminosos es una novela íntima donde se abordan los temas fundamentales de nuestro tiempo, como la migración y el choque cultural. The promise of this campus as a sanctuary where Western issues--such as background, race, and class--are resolved, succumbs to nighttime reality. Students dwell past the walls of the city, hunting everything the day denies them: light, company, tenderness, certainty. The protagonist's gaze explores those stories threaded during an endless night: the obsession with South America as a romantic, sexual, and political destination; parallel and toxic affairs; the need to erase any signs of identity in order to create a new one; literature as a safekeep; the future becomes a form of darkness barely illuminated by some far away alien stars.
