A love story of a different kind; the care and love for a friend deemed by society as profoundly mentally retarded. A time before anyone knew the term autism. The 1960s was a time of social change for Lenora McConnell and Astrid Innis. Lenora, the sassy and intelligent daughter of widow Mary McConnell, is unmercifully teased for being smart. She befriends late-comer Astrid, the odd girl from an impoverished family. Escaping a fight with a bully creates a bond between them that last a lifetime. As the girls grow up, Lenora discovers Astrid may not be the brightest crayon in the box, but she processes an unusual gift, the uncanny talent for music. Lenora's grandfather becomes Astrid's legal guardian to help her develop her talent.

Astrid unknowingly becomes the test subject of Dr. Albert Dryer. Lenora doesn't approve but is powerless to change the situation. Caught up in her study of astronomy, Lenora leaves Astrid's care to her mother. Caring for Astrid takes a toll on her love life. Anyone who falls in love with her must care about Astrid, too. Marrying young lawyer John Hopper, Lenora tries to navigate through marriage while pursuing an unconventional career in astrophysics. Society is changing in the 1960s. Gone are the days of women being homemakers, nurses, and teachers. When Astrid has a breakdown, Lenora has a tough choice to make.
