Babel nu putea fi mai plictisitor nici dacă ar fi încercat.
Cel puțin jumătate din carte este plină de pagini fără conținut și ar fi trebuit eliminate. Nimic nu se întâmplă înainte de pragul de 300 de pagini: nu există dezvoltare a personajelor, aproape deloc construire a lumii, niciun argument care să susțină premisa cărții.
Babel vrea să fie un roman despre anticolonialism, însă narațiunea nu aduce niciun argument pentru această idee. Ni se repetă la nesfârșit cât de groaznic este colonialismul și câți oameni suferă din cauza lui. Însă nu ni se oferă deloc argumente pentru această afirmație. Ni se spune doar că colonialismul este rău și ar trebui să acceptăm asta fără să punem întrebări. Atunci care este rostul acestei cărți? Dacă nu poți convinge cititorul obișnuit, cu argumente bine punctate și elocvente, de ce această parte rușinoasă a istoriei nu trebuie repetată niciodată, atunci care este scopul?
Cele patru personaje principale nu au personalitate, nu evoluează pe parcursul cărții, rămân plate și fade, ca niște bucăți de carton. Personajul principal este cel mai slab dintre toți. Robin nu are personalitate, nu are trăsături distinctive, nu are caracter, nu are gânduri, mintea lui este goală. Este o pânză albă prin care autoarea își spune povestea.
Cartea este plasată în anii 1830, dar nici nu ai ghici acest lucru. Nu există referințe culturale sau sociale la acea perioadă, nimic care să ancoreze povestea în anii 1830. Personajele, toți copii privilegiați crescuți de familii bogate cu acces la cea mai bună educație posibilă, vorbesc ca niște tineri obișnuiți din generația Z. Unde este modul victorian de exprimare? Unde este vocabularul articulat pe care ar trebui să îl aibă acești tineri străluciți?
Sistemul de magie este destul de interesant și ar fi putut avea mult potențial. Dar este complet inutil și nu schimbă cu nimic cursul istoriei.
Premisa lui Babel avea foarte mult potențial, dar execuția este foarte slabă. Nu merită nici măcar o stea.
