He is a fellow of three scientific societies: the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Geophysical Union (AGU), and the American Meteorological Society (AMS). He has received awards from the AMS for his research and his popular book The Forgiving Air: Understanding Environmental Change. From the AGU, he has received two major honors: the Climate Communication Prize (2015) and the Ambassador Award (2017). Richard is co-author (with Sam Shen) of Climate Mathematics: Theory and Applications (2019, Cambridge University Press) and co-editor of The Development of Atmospheric General Circulation Models: Complexity, Synthesis and Computation (2018, Cambridge University Press).
