Identity Church: (a memoir)

A true story of being possessed by a shadow, one planted in the mind during childhood, back in an Appalachian town steeped in Evangelical super faith. While the events are firmly rooted in the 'real' world - such as at a summer camp that prepares children for the end of the world, or in a psychiatric hospital listening to patients channel God through VCRs, or isolating in the Vermont wilderness to perform a self-exorcism - most of this story takes place in the dissolving landscape of the author's sanity.

The book explores themes of mental health, generational trauma, identity, and the divine. Though the subject matter is often bleak, Phipps's tone is steadily humorous without being flippant; reverent without being righteous. It handles taboo subject matter with careful deftness, vulnerable honesty, and, above all else, humanity.
