Reggie Brown Takes a Day Off: 4th Grade Reading Comprehension Worksheets

A Fresh, Funny, and Relatable Story for Grades 4-5

Reggie Brown Takes a Day Off by Kamichi Jackson is a humorous and heartfelt story perfect for classroom libraries, independent reading, and literature circles. Set in Baltimore, this engaging chapter book follows Reggie Brown, a spirited 9-year-old African-American girl who somehow manages to convince her mother to allow her to skip a day of school. Who knew she'd learn an important lesson anyway?

Excerpted from the original release of the chapter book You're Too Much, Reggie Brown (2001), this workbook incorporates the true story of Ruby Bridges, a young girl who made history when she attended classes in 1960.

With its honest voice and culturally rich storytelling, this title supports:

• Literacy engagement for reluctant readers
• Social-emotional learning themes (honesty, decision-making, consequences)
• Representation of a strong, funny African American girl protagonist
• Discussion opportunities around school routines, family dynamics, and growing up

Ideal for fans of Nikki & Deja by author Karen English, this realistic fiction story works well as a read-aloud, a small group book club pick, or an independent reading selection for grades 3-5. This workbook version features thirty fun reading comprehension worksheets appropriate for 4th and 5th grade readers.

Add this diverse and delightful title to your shelf. It's one students will ask for again and again.
