In 2016, 24-year-old Meghan Murphy returns home to coastal Kennebunkport, Maine to live with her father Jack, after a terrible break-up. In her father's attic, Meghan finds a faded photo and then a letter Jack wrote, but never sent to Lizzy Bennett of Alexandria, Virginia. Over time, she learns that Lizzy and Jack were once in love, and their story intrigues her enough to uncover a devastating family secret and a number of mystical signs from the universe.
In 1990, Lizzy Bennett first meets Jack Murphy while teaching at an elite prep school in Virginia. The single mother and quiet art teacher become best friends, fall in love quickly, and begin to plan their future until it is all stripped away when Jack decides to leave suddenly to raise a child he didn't know he had, and they painfully agree to part ways and never speak again. However, the universe has a different plan for Jack and Lizzy as they experience both real and magical encounters that bind them together for a lifetime.
