The Drama de los palanganas Veterano y Bisono, performed in July of 1776 in Peru as a protest to the viceroy, Manuel de Amat (1707-1782), is contextualized in this edited edition by the excellent preliminary study and notes of Guillermo Lohmann Villena. The fully annotated text of the play is preceded by introductory materials on both Amat himself and the political particularities that birthed the play. This reedition of the play offers it up as both an artistic masterpiece, and as a tool for a deeper understanding of viceregal Peru.
