A Christmas cactus, or Schlumbergera, is a common houseplant that bears colorful flowers in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
The cactus-like plant is endemic to the coastal mountains of Brazil and grows in tropical climates. The plant's flat, segmented stems grow cascadingly and feature scalloped edges. Its terminal blooms can be a variety of colors, including red, pink, white, and yellow. Typically kept as houseplants, Christmas cacti demand indirect sunlight, average moisture, and well-drained soil. Given the right conditions, they can live for decades and even reach considerable size.
