Situada en los años que precedieron a la dictadura de Pinochet, este libro estableció la reputación de Antonio Skármeta como uno de los autores más representativos de en América Latina, y sirvió como inspiración para la película ganadora del Oscar Il Postino. Mario Jiménez, un joven pescador, decide abandonar su oficio para convertirse en cartero de Isla Negra, donde la única persona que recibe y envía correspondencia es el poeta Pablo Neruda. Set in the years before Pinochet's dictatorship, this book established Antonio Skármeta's reputation as one of the most emblematic Latin American authors and served as the inspiration for the Oscar-winning film Il Postino. Mario Jiménez, a young fisherman, decides to leave his job to become the postman of a tiny island where the only person who receives correspondence is the poet Pablo Neruda. Jiménez admires Neruda and patiently hopes that one day the poet might dedicate a book to him, or at least have more than a short exchange of words and a small tip. His longing is finally rewarded and the two strike up a peculiar relationship. However, the strained atmosphere in Chile during those years brings about a dramatic dénouement.
