This book is inspired and written by what Jesus told the Sanhedrin when they wanted to know by what authority he did what he did. His answer was "I require mercy. I do not requiem sacrifice." On the surface, it seems simple enough, but it really is revealing everything, because if you knew the difference, you would truly know God.
