Fawn Germer did not climb Mount Everest, hike the Pacific Crest Trail, or eat, pray, and love her way around the world. All she did was get a van and go for a really long ride with her dog. People do that all the time. It doesn't seem special; you wouldn't say it was extraordinary.

But it was.

Fawn woke up one day feeling like time was running out. Having seven friends die in their 50s and 60s will do that to you. She wondered how many years she had left. At 62, she could no longer deceive herself that she was middle-aged. She felt invisible, wrinkled, and vulnerable. Adrift.
