Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre is one of the greatest books I've ever read. Bront has constructed a fictitious tale of Jane Eyre's early childhood, set in rural 19th-century England, that every reader cannot not but love.
For this review, I will first provide a brief introduction of Jane Eyre and closing by reflecting on the novel's virtues and flaws.
We see the tensions between love and independence, conscience and desire, and the effort of a young girl and woman to keep her self-esteem in this work. These were all pioneering issues in Victorian England's patriarchal culture in the 1800s.
Jane's battle to retain her self-esteem may be observed most clearly in her interactions with Mr. Rochester, Mrs. Reed, and Mr. Brocklehurst.
Jane's remarks regarding the aristocratic class's arrogance towards the servile classes illustrate the issue of social critique.
