Growing up as only children, the two have relied on each other and their families for friendship and support, While Sam has matured into a confident, strong, and happy-go-lucky 16-year-old, Ella Jean's development has taken a different path. Her mom left their family when Ella Jean was very young, and while her father gave her as much support as he could, she has become a quiet, introvert who struggles daily with a battle for self-esteem.

Coach Mary Henkel has just lost the Delaware State Lacrosse Championships for the second straight year. Already struggling with the pressures of raising two boys alone, and managing a demanding teaching job at an elite private high school, Mary's stress is spiraling out of control as her Principal wants her fired. Taking a friend's advice to try and regroup, Mary heads to the small beach town of Lewes, Delaware for her summer family vacation.
