The treacherous Guardian, Gregory Lycott, disappeared months ago with a magical little girl destined to either save the world or destroy it. He took her across the ocean to the Wastelands, where they hid among the criminals and outcasts. He's the only father she's ever known. It's up to Guardians Audrey, Tarian, and Piper to collect this child before the Waker inside of Gregory takes control of his mind.

Meanwhile, the tyrannical sorcerer, Lautaro, has broken the diplomatic agreement and attacked the royal family of Balefire City, the only metropolis to arise from the ashes of the Wastelands. He threatens to spread his vicious rule across the entire eastern hemisphere. The Entente people protest sending their soldiers across the oceans to fight another war. Since it's an election year, the president denies the Guardians' request for more Elite soldiers, aircraft, and weaponry.

Without the Entente government's help, it's up to the Guardians of Dare and a group of Wasteland rebels to destroy Lautaro before he discovers the magical girl and find a way to cure Gregory as to appease the girl's temperament. As if that wasn't bad enough, the Pall, an eerie forest of shadows, grows along the fringe of the Wasteland. The Pall contains origin magic and threatens worldwide devastation. The girl may be the only weapon powerful enough to stop the elusive, volatile mist of darkness, if she'll cooperate.
