Manuela ha crecido en la pobreza. Hija de una lavandera y de un indeseable, ha sufrido las penurias de una ciudad donde el abismo entre las clases sociales es insalvable. Cuando su madre muere y ella huye de un padre que quiere abusar de su poder y utilizarla, su camino se cruza con el de una joven escritora, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda.
