Legends and Lore: Spirits of Cape Hatteras Island

De (autor): Jeanette Gray Finnegan Jr

Finnegan, Jeanette Gray, Jr.: - Jeanette Gray Finnegan Jr., Torok, is a tenth-generational islander whose childhood was spent on Cape Hatteras Island when it was totally independent of mainland amenities. Jeanette---Jaye to friends---graduated from East Carolina University with a double major in English and History. She also did extensive graduate work at Old Dominion University in photography and art. After teaching both English and Advanced Placement U.S. Government, the author came home, back to the island to live. In her third floor loft, in sight of both sound and sea, Jaye researched the written and verbal history of the island in order to produce a five volume fictional, historical account of the growth of the island as it now exists. After ten years of reading books, magazines, personal accounts, and letters written by locals, the writing project began. The island has changed, and multigenerational families are dwindling. The books recall those moments that made life solid and depict a proud and innovative people, living on the edge of the world. The stories are events that actually took place. As Islanders, we know our history, and have found enough physical evidence of the facts to verify their authenticity. We would like to share this knowledge and life with those of you who are interested in Cape Hatteras Island. Enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of this strip of land you obviously feel connected to also. This is what it felt like to live a natural life, surrounded by family, friends, few strangers and lots of excitement. Growing up island was a special privilege with some unusual memories.
