Dr. Myaisha Douglas writes to occupy her time. A full-time physician with her own medical practice, she joins a writing group. During a meeting of the Greensboro Women of Color Writing Group, her college friend, Candace Knight, announces she published a book. Their group is jubilant when Candace offers to assist members in publishing their own manuscripts. Although stunned by the announcement, Myaisha looks forward to reading the novel.

Candace, however, has more on her mind than altruism. It's 2007, and the real estate market constricts. Candace juggles her broken marriage while trying to reinvent herself as an author. She teeters on the edge of ruin when a bullet ends her corporate makeover.

Appointed executor of Candace's estate, Myaisha searches for answers. Her investigation of the murder uncovers disturbing information about Candace. After the primary suspect is murdered, the police receive a tip directing them to Myaisha's writing group.

An insignificant incident provides Myaisha with a crucial clue. Suspicious, but lacking evidence, Myaisha confronts the killer and learns armchair detectives have their limitations.
