He has published extensively on international development, agriculture, health and the environment, including Cultivating Crisis: The Human Cost of Pesticides in Latin America. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1994; and Fair Trade: The challenges of transforming globalization. London and New York: Routledge, 2007; with co-editors Laura T. Raynolds and John Wilkerson. He has been a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Research and Writing Fellow in the Program on Peace and International Cooperation, and a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow. He is currently working on the second in a series of natural history memoirs, In Search of the Paper Nautilus - Life is a Beach Afterall, while relishing self-isolation in his mountain retreat on the Phantom Canyon Ranch.
