English review: After the first 300 pages (my edition has 400) I felt betrayed, " David Copperfield " and "A Christmas Carol" are two of my favorite books, and "A Tale of Two Cities" is the most famous book written by Charles Dickens and should have been the best of his work, but these 300 pages were terribly boring and they made me feel like nothing was happening. These were indeed three hundred beautifully written pages, with superb phrases and successful social criticism, but nothing more. The story was vaguely interesting, and the characters one-dimensional, Dickens told us things about them instead of suggesting those thing through well-thought scenes, besides, I couldn't really connect with any character, with well-done characters I feel an emotional connection, but now all the characters felt like that kind of co-worker /classmate you know a few things about, but that you're not really close with and about which you're not really going to think after graduation or if you change your job. Also, The French Revolution was presented very simplistically, its actual course and the destruction of Bastille, being presented in less than ten pages. After 300 pages of disappointment and frustration, 100 extraordinary pages followed, pages in which I felt that things were moving, that the characters were real and I empathized with them. If the other pages were well written, here we have a true literary delight, every page is a delectation, actually, not every page, every phrase, every sentence is perfect. We have much more action, we have tension, the book begins to convey feelings, you feel frustration and anger at the lack of justice, compassion for the Manettes and admiration for Sydney Carton. The last hundred pages made me give the book four stars initially, it was a very good conclusion for the novel even though the ending was predictable, but I realized that it would not be fair to forget the disappointment represented by the rest of the book, "A Tale of Two Cities" is far from being a bad book, Dickens achieves mastery in writing, but the main purpose of a book is to tell a story, and this story as a whole was not extraordinary. Quotes:It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other. For you, and for any dear to you, I would do anything. If my career were of that better kind that there was any opportunity or capacity of sacrifice in it, I would embrace any sacrifice for you and for those dear to you. Try to hold me in your mind, at some quiet times, as ardent and sincere in this one thing. The time will come, the time will not be long in coming, when new ties will be formed about you--ties that will bind you yet more tenderly and strongly to the home you so adorn--the dearest ties that will ever grace and gladden you. O Miss Manette, when the little picture of a happy father's face looks up in yours, when you see your own bright beauty springing up anew at your feet, think now and then that there is a man who would give his life, to keep a life you love beside you!All the devouring and insatiate Monsters imagined since imagination could record itself, are fused in the one realisation, Guillotine. It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.
