Roxette were a pop rock and soft rock duo formed during 1986, in Halmstad, Sweden, comprising Marie Fredriksson (vocals and keyboards) and Per Gessle (vocals and guitar). The duo became an international act in the late '80s, when they issued their breakthrough L.P. Look Sharp! Their 3rd album Joyride, which was released during 1991, became just as big a hit as its predecessor. Roxette went on to have 19 UK Top 40 hits, along with several US Hot 100 entries, including 4 US chart-toppers with The Look, Listen to Your Heart, It Must Have Been Love, featured on the soundtrack of Pretty Woman, and Joyride. Their other hits included Dressed for Success, Dangerous, and Fading Like a Flower. Before coming together to form the duo, Marie and Per were already established artists in Sweden, she having put out a number of solo L.Ps, with him being the lead singer and songwriter of Gyllene Tider (Swedish for Golden Times or Golden Age), a group that had 3 No. 1 albums. Following the advice of the managing director of their record label, the two came together to record Neverending Love, which became a Swedish hit single. After the issue of Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus!, a greatest hits record, the duo had a break before returning with the L.Ps Have a Nice Day (1999) and Room Service (2001). They continued to chart in other countries, mainly in Europe and Latin America, where they received several Gold and Platinum awards until the beginning of the new millennium. The duo had a hiatus when Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002. Gessle went on to release solo albums then reunited with Gyllene Tider before Roxette took to the stage together again for the first time for 8 years, during 2009, on Gessle's European Party Crasher tour. They issued Charm School in 2011, their first studio L.P. for 10 years, which was followed by Travelling the next year. Good Karma, released during 2016, was their final studio album, as although the duo planned to put out more studio material, Marie's ill health prevented it before her death on 9th December 2019. Their songs It Must Have Been Love and Listen to Your Heart continue to receive wide radio airplay, with both singles recently receiving awards from BMI for having had 5 million radio plays. They've sold an estimated 75 million records worldwide, with over 10 million certified copies sold in Germany, the US and the UK, Joyride and Look Sharp! going gold and platinum in all 3 countries.
