Orczy, Baroness: - Baroness Emmuska Orczy, born in 1865 in Hungary, was a British novelist, playwright, and artist best known for her historical adventure novel The Scarlet Pimpernel (1905). Orczy was the daughter of a Hungarian aristocrat and spent much of her early life in Budapest, Brussels, and Paris before settling in London. Her cosmopolitan upbringing influenced her writing, as she infused her works with elements of European history, particularly the French Revolution. Orczy's most famous creation, The Scarlet Pimpernel, is a tale of daring rescues and espionage set during the French Revolution. The story established the archetype of the masked avenger and became a beloved classic, inspiring numerous adaptations for stage, film, and television. Beyond The Scarlet Pimpernel, Orczy wrote over a dozen sequels featuring the character, as well as numerous other novels and short stories.
