After being shipwrecked at sea, Englishman John Blackthorne wakes up in a land few Europeans have heard of, let alone seen: Japan. Thrown into the confined society of seventeenth-century Japan, where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not just a strange people with unfamiliar traditions and language, but also his own conceptions of morality, truth, and liberty. As internal political struggle and a collision of cultures lead to apparently unavoidable violence, Blackthorne's devotion and character are challenged by both passion and grief, and he is caught between two universes that will both be permanently altered.
