This story recounts the origins of the Chinese zodiac. The Jade Emperor called for a great race among his animal subjects to determine who would fulfill the guard duties for the Heavenly Gates. Each animal displayed unique skills to cross the river and finish the race. Their journeys reflect each animal's unique characteristics, and secured their positions in the zodiac.
