Stratton-Porter, Gene: - Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924) was an American novelist, naturalist, photographer, and conservationist whose fiction drew heavily on the landscapes, wildlife, and rural communities of Indiana. Born Geneva Grace Stratton in Wabash County, Indiana, she developed a lifelong interest in birds, insects, plants, and wetlands, and much of her best-known work reflects close observation of the natural world. Her writing helped bring the Limberlost Swamp and other Midwestern environments into popular fiction at a time when many such habitats were being drained, cleared, and transformed.Stratton-Porter became one of the most widely read American authors of the early twentieth century.
