The mission of Hands Up is to encourage the d/Deaf to learn more about the performing arts and encourage the hearing to learn ASL and interact with d/Deaf peers. Their vision is to create 100% theatrical performances for the d/Deaf and hearing communities to enjoy as one! Through many losses, including her hearing, failed businesses, rocky relationships, and an assault, Kristy finds strength in the eyes of her children. "Nothing we do is a failure, only a lesson learned." She speaks to resilience as finding your true purpose and allowing it to create a fire inside you to stand up and continue with your life. Miss Whilden states, "I wrote this story in hopes that I will get it into the hands of the next girl sitting on a rape and abuse shelter bed wondering if she matters. You do matter. You are the star of your life. Shine bright!"
